Dresden 6/17/18
Saturday we took a short flight from Munich to Dresden, a remarkable city that we visited once before about 30 years ago. During the waning days of WWII this once beautiful city with its many palaces and historic architecture was fire-bombed by the Allies in retaliation for the destruction of Coventry, England by the Luftwaffe. When we visited the historic Frauenkirche was but a ruin. However, thanks to the determination of the inhabitants of Dresden and with international assistance, the beautiful church was faithfully reconstructed using much of the original stone from the ruins. We attended two events in the church including a wonderful evening choral concert featuring three different choirs. We also visited the Dresden Royal Palace with its remarkable Green Vault that houses the largest collection of royal gems in Europe. The palace was also destroyed by the bombing in 1945, and is still under reconstruction. Today will be a day to visit the important art museums here in remarkable Dresden.
