There seems to be some question as to whether or not the unruly student in Florida who was questioning John
Kerry was actually
tasered. My understanding is that a
taser leaves you incapacitated for several minutes. The video I watched shows the student pretty much active and talking even when the five cops had him on the floor. Maybe they were just threatening him with the
taser. We'll have to wait for more information. In the meantime, I think that this weapon, the
taser comes close to being outright inhumane. I understand that the cops policy is that the use of the
taser is to be reserved only for situations where the personal safety of the officer is threatened, about the same as for the use of lethal force (shooting someone with your sidearm.) I don't think any cops were in danger from this kid. Over at
Huffington, one person who left a comment sees it this way:
This is clearly excessive force no matter how nutty or manipulative the
speaker was. He was no physical threat to them. What has happened to cop good
sense that 5-6 of them can't escort a non-violent loud mouth out of a room?
Instead he is pushed to the ground, controlled, and then electrocuted. We live
in terrible times.
If he was in fac t, tasered, I agree.
