Milan, August 19, 2018

At the start of our last day in Milan, we took the metro to a quiet, residential neighborhood, to see the most important art museum in the city, the Brera Picture Gallery. With its strong collection of Italian paintings, some highlights were works by Raphael, Piero Della Francesca and Caravaggio. We were able to walk to the smaller "house art gallery," the Poldi-Pizzoli Museum, which contains not only paintings, but clocks, watches, armour, porcelain, etc. After lunch at a neighborhood bistrot, Rosa Luna, with Jim's seafood served in a fish-shaped hollowed-out loaf of bread (see photo,) we stopped at our hotel for a short rest. Our final attraction was the ancient, mainly Romanesque church of St. Ambrogio, with its unique early Christian atrium, one of the few sill standing. (Most were demolished in later times.) Seeing the beautiful church was a fitting finale to our stay in Milano. - Dan
