When we learned Thursday evening that officials would likely order a mandatory evacuation not only of Fire Island, but also the southern shore of Long Island, we decided to close the house and drive back to Philadelphia. All we can do now it to hope that Irene doesn't do too much damage to Fire Island and Long Island.
