By us, the ocean washed over the dune by about 30 to 40 feet, piling up sand on top of the beach grass. The dune will recover, and when you have a couple hundred feet of dune in front of you, that's a good feeling. In the Pines, all the nascent dune that they had was washed over with waves lapping at the beachfront properties. Water also entered the Pines through the vehicle cut at Coast Guard Walk. Yesterday Dan couldn't even walk across the center of the Pines due to flooding from that cut. Other areas on Fire Island where the dune has been cut to allow for vehicle access also flooded. These cuts ought to be closed.
